Why Buy Christian Art?

Ralph B. MitchellRalph Mitchell

As Christians, we soon learn we may not want to alienate family and friends who do not believe  just as we do by being persistent about our faith.  Many have been confronted by the “obnoxious”  Christian who speaks constantly, forcefully, and relentlessly about their own faith and point of view. There is a time for sharing one’s faith but that time must find a willing and somewhat receptive mind. And there is the rub.  How do we discern another’s willingness to hear?  Often just opening the subject may seem quite awkward.  We may not want to be perceived as “pushy” by starting with faith-based questions and yet we may feel a responsibility, a calling, to tell someone else the good news we have discovered.  Because of the awkwardness of this situation, many Christians avoid talking about this subject with friends altogether.  But there is a graceful way to begin a conversation about faith or theology.

Notice the words “faith or theology” as if they are separate things,  which they are!  There are theologians who have little or no faith and there are people who know little about theology who have great faith.  When these two exist in the same living, breathing human being it is a sight to behold; a wonderful thing! So what is a graceful way to introduce the subject or start this conversation?  By hanging a piece of art that is noticeably Christian in a prominent place in your home.

By “noticeably Christian” we do not mean some beautiful, peaceful scene that is a wonder of God and nature.  We are referring to an artwork thatobviously tells a biblical story - an artwork of clearly visible Christian heritage and history. You might begin the discussion about the art itself: the scene, the people in the painting, the background, what the artist may have meant to communicate.  What do you see?  Does this work give you any particular feeling as you study it? Then the story behind the work can then be told.  One might say, “We as Christians believe …” and “Is this a story with which you are familiar?” or “We have had a good amount of time to study this work and we have noticed …”

While there are no known reliable statistics on the subject, it is believed that 97% of Christian homes have no artwork of noticeable Christian subject matter hanging in a prominent place in their home. Isn’t it time for you to evidence your faith and your beliefs by starting with an artwork about a biblical story to hang prominently in a gathering space in your home.  Look at the artworks on this website.  Study each one.  Each high quality giclée on canvas comes with the biblical story of that event and with information about the artwork

Express your faith!  Experience the story!

May God bless you as you tell His story!
